Studying in Castelló: papers for UJI students and others
Your passport decides your papers, not your course. EU, EEA and Swiss students who stay over three months register for the green certificate; students from outside the EU arrive with a student visa and, for a course longer than six months, book the fingerprints for a TIE card. Both may share a lecture hall at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI), Castelló’s public university.

01European students (EU, EEA, Switzerland)
You need no visa. Past three months of stay, the rule is to register as an EU resident and receive the green certificate on form EX-18. As a student, you show your enrolment, health insurance (the European Health Insurance Card or a private policy) and a signed declaration that your money covers your living costs.
A single semester can go past three months. Count your dates before you decide that you do not need to register.
02From outside the EU: the stay for studies
You come with a student visa from the Spanish consulate, which gives you an authorisation of stay for studies (estancia por estudios). If the course runs longer than six months, a TIE card follows: you book its fingerprint appointment, the toma de huellas, soon after arriving.
- Your EX-17, signed
- Passport with the student visa
- A recent passport photo
- Your enrolment or admission letter
- The paid 790-012, stamped or with its online receipt
03When the course runs on: the extension
A stay for studies is granted for your course. If the course goes on longer, or you start new studies, you ask for an extension (prórroga) before the current stay ends. The Delegación del Gobierno’s page says that in Castellón the request for this extension is handed in at the premises of the Comisaría Provincial, and that the decision comes from the Oficina de Extranjería. policia.es lists students and extensions of stay at both police addresses.
04A job beside the lectures
EU students may work freely. A stay for studies can allow some work too, under conditions set by the rules; the Delegación del Gobierno lists a work authorisation for holders of a stay for studies among the procedures of its office on Calle Escultor Viciano. Look at the conditions of your own stay before you accept a job.

Questions on this sample
Does the university do these papers for me?
No, the university is not an immigration office. It gives you the enrolment papers you need, and its international office can often explain the local practice.
I am Ecuadorian with a student visa for a full degree. Is the visa enough?
It is enough to enter Spain. For a course of more than six months, book the fingerprints for your TIE soon after you arrive.
I am Polish and here for one semester. Must I register?
If you stay more than three months, yes. Register for the green certificate as a student, with your enrolment, health cover and statement of means.
Can I stay to work after my degree?
Possibly. There are routes from a stay for studies to a work authorisation, each with conditions; ask us before your stay ends, not after.
