Ref. CS-102 · European passports: EU, EEA, Switzerland
Your green certificate in Castelló, for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens
Europeans (EU, EEA and Swiss citizens) register as residents once their stay in Spain passes three months: form EX-18, the paid fee and proof of their situation. In return comes the certificado de registro, which people call the green certificate after the colour of its paper, with the NIE printed on it. In Castelló you book it for the province and go to the police address on your confirmation.

01Three months is the line
A holiday needs nothing. A move does. A contract with a ceramics firm in Onda, a lease in the Grau, a semester at the Universitat Jaume I that turns into a job: once your stay goes past three months, you register.
Registration is done once. After that, you only update it when your situation changes, for example a new address.
02The evidence follows your life here
- Working for an employer: the contract, or a letter from the company confirming the job
- Working for yourself: proof of your registration as autónomo (self-employed)
- Studying: proof of enrolment, health insurance, and your own signed declaration of sufficient money
- Retired or living on savings: pension or bank papers showing enough income for you and any family, plus public or private health cover
- Moving to join an EU relative already living here: documents proving the relationship, and that person’s registration
03Certificado de registro UE Castellón: the folder
- The EX-18, every box you need completed, and your signature
- A passport or national ID card that has not expired, and a photocopy
- The paid 790-012, stamped or with its online receipt
- The evidence that matches your case (see the list just above)
- A padrón certificate, showing your address on the town’s list of residents; officers may ask for it
04Which counter in Castelló
policia.es lists EU registration certificates (certificados de registro de ciudadano de la Unión) at both police addresses in the city: Plaza Teodoro Izquierdo 6 and Calle Río Sella 5. The State’s regional office, the Delegación del Gobierno, also places the certificate among the procedures done at the premises of the Comisaría Provincial.
On the booking website, the certificate for EU citizens has its own procedure, separate from the NIE alone. Book that one, and go to the address on the confirmation.
05Living with the green sheet
There is no photo on it, so it cannot serve as identification. Carry it together with your passport or ID card. When your address or your family situation changes, let the police know, so the record stays right.

Questions on this sample
Is the green certificate an identity card?
No. It shows that you are registered as a resident, nothing more. Your passport or national ID card still proves who you are.
We are an Italian couple with two children. Do we all register?
Yes. Each person who lives here gets a certificate of their own. For the children, bring proof of the family link, such as their birth certificates.
I have no job yet. Can I still register?
A job is only one basis. Savings plus health cover, a course of study, or being the relative of a European who lives here can also ground your registration.
I live in Almassora. Is it a different booking?
You choose the province of Castellón, like someone who lives in the city. The confirmation names the office. Register on the padrón of Almassora, where you live.
